Taylor Swift New Album Pink Slip Country

The Taylor Swift New Album, “1989” Gives Country The Pink Slip (& We’re Lovin’ It)

Country darling Taylor Swift is steadily rebranding her image, transitioning from doe-eyed American sweetheart to take-charge pop star shakin’ off the haters. From her current outings in the media, she seems to be more in control and confident than ever. Using this time in her life as a springboard to evolve as a person and artist, Swift shows us how New York and the era of the 80’s, two powerful spaces, have impacted her musical and personal identity. Lucky for us fans, we get to follow her on this new journey!

From buoyant curls, porkpie hats, and Keds to red lips, a polished bob, and a more timeless (still swoon-worthy) style that even Amal Alamuddin fancies, Taylor is ready to leave her good-girl country image in a trail of dust, pursuing a mature yet still fun-to-dance-to sound. She’s growing with her twentysomething fanbase and we’re ready.

The Taylor Swift new album, “1989,” which will be number five for the international hit maker, will be released next week, October 27th and is currently available for pre-order on itunes. She’s already released three tracks, including the infectious dance song of the summer/fall “Shake It Off,” as well as “Out of the Woods,” a more rhythmic tune reminiscent of the band M83, and “Welcome to New York,” a soon-to-be anthem for movers and groovers of all kinds.

Thus far, my favorite track is “Out of the Woods” (I’ve probably contributed to 100+ listens on YouTube) as it does both a great job of storytelling, and melodically/methodically luring me into the emotions of Swift’s narrative. For those who don’t know, the song is about her previous relationship with Harry Styles.

Taylor Swift continues to wow us with her charm, down-to-earth charisma, and quirky (but not in a Manic Pixie Dream Girl kind of way) personality. Fans adore her because she engages with us, tells our stories, and is truthful in a way that makes us certain she is nothing but herself onstage, in front of the camera, or even when sporting a cat-adorned graphic robe on a flight. Whether she’s hosting listening parties for her biggest fans, or poking fun at a tumblr meme, Swift assures us she is one of us, just another twentysomething trying to find her way.

Has Taylor Swift given country music the PINK SLIP? It seems like it for now, but who’s to say that’s a bad thing.

Pink Slip Music Festival Kimonos

Too Attached To Your Fringe With Benefits?

Lose the Fringe Kimono for Next Year’s Music Festival

Fringe kimonos were huge this season, especially at music festivals. The free-flowing, light weight fabrics and shake-ready hems encompassed the characteristics of a modern-day flower child. With help from celebrities who frequently don the boho-style, like Vanessa Hudgens, this particular look easily trickled down to the streets and into stores. Sadly, with the onset of fall and winter, boho chic for this season is fading to black and may be too stuck in last season’s closet for it to resurface for 2015.

Often paired with crop tops, distressed denim shorts, ankle booties, and a wide brim hat, fringe kimonos top off effortless looks with a featherweight touch. However, fringe has a habit of making its way back into our wardrobes with an element of out-of-date trendiness. Let’s avoid any wardrobe fads and axe the fringe hem before it makes it to the sale section of Urban Outfitters.

For next year’s music festival style, go for romantic patterns and diaphanous looks. Beaded, decorative fringe will also make a splash, wavering from the western feel of 2014. For an even more sleek finish, opt for suede in a deep, luxe hue adding decadence to your hit outfit.

Plan for next season and ditch the 2014 fringe kimono wardrobe fad. Fringe Kimonos are getting The Pink Slip.

Back That Thang Up & Into The Trash

Pink Slip Cheeky Shorts

It’s Time to Pink Slip The Cheeky Short

Feeling cheeky? Snap out of it!

Cheeky shorts—with or without a fringe hem—is definitely out. Chuck this trend into the same pool as tramp stamps, choker collars, and platform boots. (Slip dresses from the 90’s are the only trend that still gets a pass).

Though Pink Slip is a fan of baby-got-back style, believe it or not, there is such a thing as showing too much skin and cheeky shorts fall into that category.

Who knows where this trend cropped up from–I’m guessing during the pop princess era of Britney/Christina/Mariah–but cheeky shorts are still making rounds with teens and twenty-somethings trying way too hard to emphasize their barely-there-derriere.

Opt for a high-waisted, mid-thigh short instead, which will look fab with a cropped top, to accentuate the glutes and show off leg. Plus a high-waist short can work well at any scene, whereas the cheeky short may only be good for the beach or in a rap video.

Toss the risky-and-frisky style for a more fashion savvy skin-is-in look. Cheeky shorts are getting the PINK SLIP.

Hair Today…Gone Tomorrow!

Pink Slip Lavender Hair

Color me crazy, but is anyone else tired of seeing the lavender hair trend?

First spotted on Katy Perry in 2011, lavender hair was once heralded as rock-n-roll runway chic. From catwalk to street style, this look quickly became all of the rage, with teens recreating the lavender-blonde locks.

Now that we’ve reached the peak of pastel hair colors, with style divas like Kelly Osbourne sporting this fantastical hairdo, I think it’s time we start to color in the lines again and ditch this candy queen/fairy aesthetic.

It was chic before but now this trend needs to be given the pink slip. As with any dye job, maintaining vibrant locks is a high maintenance feat. Unless you are a celebrity with a team of stylists on call, regular hair upkeep kind of goes out the window and the once vibrant color starts to fade to a grayish hue. And who wants more gray then lavender! Plus, all of the chemicals are bound to be damaging to your mane.

Let’s lose the lacquered locks all together (unless you’re prepped for some serious hairdo upkeep) and opt for natural hues instead. If you insist on having a colored coiffure with a pop, look into more temporary options, like a wig, extensions, or even semi-permanent dye that’s easy to abandon or wash out when the look simply isn’t working anymore.

Hammer Time? Let’s Reschedule…

Pink Slip Harem Pants

By Ashley Salinas & Elan Carson

Pink Slip Harem Pants

Justin Bieber is a huge fan of harem pants. He rocks the crotch-sagging style whenever he gets the chance to finesse his bad-boy chic persona. After seeing Justin in this trend, some “Beliebers” have probably made the effort to go out and purchase a pair of this horrendous pant.

Harem pants hit the style scene around the release of M.C. Hammer’s 1980’s “Can’t Touch This” music video, sparking up a large following. Fast forward to the 2000’s and they once again became a trend in 09′ with more crazy patterns and now different sized crotch bagginess.

Like most of you when this trend first came out you wouldn’t want to be caught dead wearing them. You probably even said “Who would sport those?” Or if you did don a pair–for like a week–you tried to give these super silly looking pants a fashionable appeal with stilettos and fitted top.

But no matter how these pants are styled, they simply are unflattering and does no one any justice. Think wide hips, thin legs, and no derriere shape. Pink slip the harem pants trend so you don’t look back and say “What was I thinking!”

If you can’t seem to let this trend go back to 1980, here are a few styling tips: Go with a slimmer fit harem pant with not so much crotch action and follow the style tip above on pairing it with a fitted shirt and heels. Trust me, you’ll look less like you just came out of a genie bottle.

It’s Time to Break Up With Your Boyfriend (Jeans)!

Pink Slip Fashion Boyfriend Jeans

Hi again from Pink Slip Fashion! In lieu of Katy Perry and John Mayer’s breakup, we’re also calling it quits with our beloved relationship we’ve had with boyfriend jeans…no pity party necessary!

A staple at mall-mainstream stores like Old Navy and The Gap, the boyfriend jean was supposed to hit all the style checkpoints. We’re talking comfort, fashion, and cool factor. Let’s no forget, it’s also a beach gal’s perennial favorite if you’re close to the sand. Think Jen Aniston in striped tee, slashed boyfriend jeans, and flats.

The problem with this “schlubby” trend however, is that it easily falls into the category of something celebrities and models can sometimes pull off and the average woman may fall into the style don’t cateorgy when attempting.

What happens is that the baggy silhouette creates an unflattering backside (who doesn’t want to show off healthy junk-in-the-trunk proportions) and shorten the leg length, as the pants are most likely to be cuffed at the ankle. Layer on a thick cardigan with a slouchy tee and you have a recipe for a style slop fest.

If you want to pull off a shabby supermodel chic look, choose a jean flattering to your shpae but that has mild distressing. Keep the slouchy tee OR the cardigan and opt for a loose bun. Voila!

So it’s time to cut loose this relationship and PINK SLIP boyfriend jeans.

Out of This World…Out of Our Closets

Pink Slip Galactic Prints

Wave Goodbye to Galactic Prints

Looking for an out-of-this-world trend? Keep looking, because we’re tossing galactic prints back on a rocket and into the cosmos far far away from us.

Who knows how this whimsical style quickly found its way in our wardrobes. Maybe it was the Urban Outfitters, hipster-cool, fanaticism that drew us in, or maybe on some subconscious level, Miley Cyrus’s performance with a talking space cat further fueled our need for intergalactic space attire.

Either way, let’s ditch the galactic gimmicks–best suited for our pre-teen counterparts–and rejoin the modern world with contemporary, structural pieces…think asymmetrical hemlines or even peplums.

Toss this trend back into the triple-marked-down sale section of Urban and update your wardrobe with structured pieces highlighting both a modern and futuristic flair.

Freeze! This Tribal Poncho is in Serious Trouble

Pink Slip Tribal Ponchos

With snowstorms perilously making their way across the country–stealthily avoiding sunny SoCal–it’s no shocker that fashionistas everywhere are bundling up in soft-to-the-touch cashmeres, cozy cable knits, and warm wool blends. Seemingly easy to toss on layers: styling print button-downs with embroidered cardigans or even opting for a tough-as-nails leather look, there’s one miss that a lot of people seem to fall victim to: the tribal poncho!

PInk Slip the Checkers Fashion Trend

Say Checkmate! It’s Time to Pink Slip The Checkers Fashion Trend

My guess is your style probably has a checkered past. With the resurgence of gargantuan black & white square patterns on runways this past Spring 2013, it’s easy to see how this checkers fashion trend quickly gathered speed in both high fashion circles and street style cultures. However, it’s time to call checkmate on this game and switch to a pattern that doesn’t make us look like walking chessboards.
