The 1 Look that Will Always Strike Out

Pink Slip Fashion is back this week with the trend that we’re ready to see gone! For all of those who’s wardrobe is still living in the early 2000’s, it’s time to hang up those hiphuggers!
Popularized by our love for Britney Spears and the catchy 2001 Levi’s commercial with singing bellybuttons, the “I’m Coming Out” navel-baring low rise is now going…going…gone out of style.

Known for giving even the most petite body shapes a muffin top and creating a short and stumpy physique this low-rise trend KEEPS uncomfortably popping out and on to our radar. It’s time to let go of this hip-hugging style for good.
If you’re still itchin’ to show off some skin for the season, sport a trending crop top with a high-waist short, skirt, or flattering mid-rise jean instead.

Queen Bey Needs a Reality Check!

Queen Bey is in need of an “Oops I did it again” moment with a hit single as her latest track “Bow Down” is not playing out so well with the public. Celebrated fashion icon and diva, as well as noted women’s rights supporter, her new track features the repetitious B-word and some odd imagery that’s, quite frankly, scaring us! Come on Beyonce, stop jockin’ Rihanna’s style and get it together…pronto. I’m gonna have to give this song the PINK SLIP!

Style Evolution: Britney Spears

What’s fascinating about pop music is the idealized culture that comes along with it — the identity branded with a celebrity created through lyrics, dance moves, and how an artist dresses on and off the stage. The intention is for listeners to unite and revel in the music collectively. Yet, there has to be a level of sincerity behind a pop star’s image in order for listeners to participate and fully buy into the complete experience of the music.

When I think “Pop Star,” names that come to mind include industry heavy weights Madonna, The Beatles, Michael & Janet Jackson, Prince, Christina Aguilera, and as of late, Lady Gaga. Yet there’s one woman who has made a clear mental imprint. After nearly two decades of simplistic yet ingenious song lyrics, catchy tunes, and unquestionable influence on youth, Britney Spears has more than earned the moniker Pop Princess, but can we also throw in the title fashion icon or is it too soon?

Sure Britney has had numerous memorable costumes, starting with her first hit video “Hit Me Baby One More Time” when she wore a Catholic schoolgirl uniform. Or in the “Oops…I Did it Again” video, she donned her own full length red bodysuit. But she’s rarely pushed the boundaries with her personal image, outside of tanks, shorts, flip-flops and trucker hats. She even states in Elle, “I love my jeans and my sweats-I’m really just a tomboy at heart. So it’s really hard for me to be like Kim Kardashian and be makeup-and hair-ready every time I go out of my house. I’m not a believer in that, you know? On the other hand, when you do wear those sweats, you’re like, Oh God, I should step it up a notch.” Yet with her dual covers on October’s issue of Elle, it seems as if this pop star is reinventing her good-girl-gone-bad-turned-mommy image to include fashion icon as well.

Not only does she embrace her identity as a pop star in this issue, confidently wearing a brief-like pair of rhinestone hot shorts, fishnets, and cropped top with blue leather jacket on one spread, she also expresses her softer mommy-chic side. On the following page, you can find her wearing a viscose blended dress from Bottega Venetta with red patent pointed toe pumps as a sleek contrast to the navy hued knit. Who knew she had it in her? If you continue to flip through the editorial, her style goes back and forth from stage diva to sophisticated and cool off-stage celebrity, unifying her pop and down-to-earth real life persona with casually polished looks.

Britney is certainly coming into her own with her personal styling choices and to me that’s good enough for this pop princess.
